Arsenal boss Emery ‘happy’ with Sporting win despite difficult first half

Arsenal extended their run of victories to 11 games after winning away against Sporting Lisbon last night in the Europa League.

Striker Danny Welbeck finished clinically in the 77th minute after a defensive error by former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates to hand the Gunners their first ever win away against a Portuguese side.

Speaking after the game Arsenal coach Unai Emery admitted his side had not been at their best during the first-half, but revealed that he was happy his side improved after the break and won out against their main rival in Europa League Group E.

“In the ninety minutes many different things happened, tactically,” Emery said in his post-match press conference.

“The first-half was not easy for us. And the balance of the two teams meant that there were not a lot of chances to score. But step by step we imposed our play in the second-half and we played to win this match.

“The result is important because we want to finish first in this group. Sporting is the other team at the top with us, so we are happy.”

Arsenal will be aiming to make it 12 wins on the trot in all competitions when they travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on Sunday in the Premier League.
