Arsenal are confident that the club will agree a deal to sign Jurrien Timber from Ajax after submitting an improved bid for the defender.

Mikel Arteta’s side saw an opening offer of £30m turned down for Timber last week, but negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs in a bid to reach an agreement.

Arsenal have increased their initial offer after submitting a second official proposal and Fabrizio Romano is reporting that there is confidence from the Gunners that a deal will be agreed.

The north Londoners have agreed personal terms with Timber over a five-year deal and the Netherlands international is keen on the move to Arsenal and the Premier League.

The centre-back was subject of interest from Manchester United last summer, but turned down a move to the Premier League in order to remain at Ajax and focus on making the Dutch squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Timber was named as the Eredivisie Player of the Year during Ajax’s title-winning season in 2021/22 and has made 121 appearances since progressing from the club’s academy ranks.

He has featured predominantly in central defence for Ajax, but has also been used at full-back on occasion and will add to Arsenal’s defensive options after injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba last season.
