Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign highly rated Cardiff City youngster Axel Donczew, with the 16-year-old expected to complete his move to north London this week after undergoing a medical.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement with his trademark “Here we go”, reporting that Donczew has already completed the necessary medical checks before putting pen to paper on his Arsenal contract.

The move follows reports earlier this week that the Premier League champions were closing in on one of the most promising talents in British football.

Donczew made history in October 2025 when he became Cardiff’s youngest-ever first-team player.

Aged just 15 years and 234 days, he came off the bench in an EFL Trophy tie against Newport County, breaking the club record previously held by Aaron Ramsey.

The attacking midfielder went on to make a second senior appearance later in the competition and has continued his rapid development with Wales’ youth teams.

Capable of playing through the middle or in wider attacking roles, Donczew is regarded as one of the standout prospects to emerge from Cardiff’s academy.

He has represented Wales at several youth levels despite also being eligible to play for Poland at senior international level.

The teenager is expected to join Arsenal’s academy setup initially, continuing a recruitment strategy that has seen the club target some of the country’s brightest young players.

Mikel Arteta has shown a willingness to promote academy graduates in recent seasons, with Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman all benefiting from opportunities in the first team.

Arsenal narrowly missed out on Leicester City prodigy Jeremy Monga earlier in the transfer window after Manchester City won the race for his signature.

The impending arrival of Donczew underlines the club’s determination to strengthen its long-term pipeline of talent alongside additions to the senior squad.

An official announcement is expected once the remaining paperwork has been completed.
