The reigning Copa America winners and current World Champions, Argentina, will take on European champions Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Argentina have been just as dominant, matching a historic achievement by winning all seven of their matches on the way to the final. They secured their place with a 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-finals.
Showing immense determination, the defending champions have delivered a powerful attacking performance, scoring 19 goals in the tournament — the highest total in this World Cup. They have also scored at least twice in each of their last 13 matches, underlining their attacking consistency. Their semi-final performance once again showcased their tactical strength and control.
Argentina team news
Argentina come into the final with a fully fit squad, giving Lionel Scaloni plenty of options as he aims to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
One key talking point is goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who has revealed he has been playing with a broken finger throughout the tournament.
He plans to undergo surgery after the final and will still start in goal. In defence, Cristian Romero has recovered from the muscle cramps that affected him in earlier knockout games and is expected to partner Lisandro Martínez.
The midfield trio of Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister will once again provide balance and intensity.
All eyes will be on the attack, where 39-year-old Lionel Messi is set to play what could be his final match for Argentina.
He will partner Julián Álvarez, and Messi has been in exceptional form, currently in the Golden Boot race with eight goals and four assists.
Giuliano Simeone may move to the bench, with either Rodrigo De Paul or Nicolas Gonzalez likely to come into the starting lineup.
Argentina predicted lineup
Possible Argentina starting XI: E. Martínez; Montiel, Romero, L. Martínez, Tagliafico; De Paul, Paredes, Fernández, Mac Allister; Messi, Álvarez
When will the match kick off?
The match will kick off at 8pm BST on Sunday, 19th July.
