Ange Postecoglou joked that Spurs missed out on a major signing on transfer deadline day… after Lewis Hamilton announced his decision to leave F1’s Mercedes for Ferrari.
Spurs strengthened their squad in the January transfer window with the arrivals of Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner early in the month, with deadline day having been anti-climatic across the Premier League in comparison to past seasons.
Premier League clubs conducted minimal business in the final hours of the window, with the headline news in the sporting world the decision of seven-time F1 champion Hamilton to move to Ferrari at the end of the season.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Everton this weekend, Postecoglou was keen to wind up the assembled press over the lack of transfer action.
“Probably the only disappointing one for us yesterday was on where I felt there was a good opportunity for us, but the club didn’t feel it was right. I was disappointed at that. But he ended up at Ferrari so we just have to cop it…
“Look at you all eh?! Ready to type away! I think his [press officer’s] phone was going to blow up. I got you all going there didn’t I? I felt you needed something after a bit of a flat day yesterday so I’m trying to spark things up for you!
“From our perspective we had some clear objectives in there. One was we had a real gap at centre-back, particularly after letting Davinson Sanchez go after the window closed last time and getting Radu Dragusin early was great. Obviously getting Timo Werner early as well was also excellent for us.
“With the injuries we’ve had and with with Son Heung-min away, the beauty of getting them early is they have made a contribution. If we had left it to the last day yesterday it still takes time to settle. Both of them have settled well.
“Even in terms of outgoings, we got some good loans. With Alejo Veliz it’s great for him to get game time at a good club in a good league. Also players like Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine got good loans, too.”
