Ruben Amorim has said he is ready to adapt his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation more regularly at Manchester United.

Amorim opted for a four-man backline during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day, amid a reshuffle forced upon him by absences.

The Portuguese coach has come under pressure for sticking with his preferred three centre-back set-up, as United have struggled for consistent results. However, speaking ahead of the club’s clash with Wolves tomorrow, Amorim has said he’s willing to be more flexible.

Discussing the change, he said the Red Devils ‘are not going to play with three defenders all the time’, even when he has a full squad to choose from.

“When I came here last season, I understood maybe I don’t have the players to play well in that system, but it was the beginning of a process,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“We were trying to build an identity. Today is a different moment. We don’t have a lot of players, and we need to adapt, so they understand why we are changing.

“It is not because of the pressure of you guys [media], or the fans.

“When you [media] talk about changing the system all the time, I cannot change because the players will understand I’m changing because of you and I think that is the end for the manager.

“When we are playing well in our system, that is the moment to change.

“We are going to become a better team because when all the players return, we are not going to play with three defenders all the time.”
