Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly close to purchasing a large minority stake of Liverpool FC.

According to Sky News, a consortium including Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin are “closing in on a deal” to buy up “roughly one-third” of the club.

The investor group is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia was a shareholder in Championship outfit Queen’s Park Ranger until recently.

The report claims that Liverpool are “preparing” to announce the deal sometime this week, possibly in the “coming days”, though it could “slip into next week.

The consortium’s investment in the Reds will reportedly value the club at a whopping £4.4 billion($6bn), making it one of the biggest deals in the history of football.

Bezos is one of the richest men in the world, with Forbes estimating his vast fortune at over over £207 billion ($280bn), and was the world’s wealthiest person from 2017 to 2021.
