Six more Liverpool stars are in line for a new deal following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract extension, as the club looks to avoid a repeat of Gini Wijnaldum’s recent departure.
The Reds were forced to let the Dutchman depart on a free transfer earlier this summer, the midfielder opting not to renew his contract at the club in order to seal a switch to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
With the club losing one of their key first-team regulars for nothing, they appear to be keen to prevent a similar scenario occurring in the future, hence the desire to tie the integral core of their current squad down to new deals.
One pivotal asset has already agreed to a new deal, full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold signing a new four-year contract that is set to make him one of the club’s highest earners, alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the same wage bracket.
The hugely talented 22-year-old is viewed as a potential future captain at Anfield, with his contract extension a marker of his ‘immense importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side’, having developed into one of Europe’s most creative defenders over the last few seasons.
As per The Athletic, the club are now preparing to offer new deals to six of its first-team squad, with Alexander-Arnold’s contract extension likely to be the first of many in the coming months.
The report suggests that Salah, Mane and van Dijk are all set to be offered renewals, with Brazilian duo Fabinho and Alisson also in line for a new deal, as well as Scotland captain Andy Robertson.
One man who may not be putting pen to paper any time soon, however, is Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool captain seeing talks falter over a new deal, despite his current contract being set to expire in June 2023.
The former Sunderland midfielder is said to be interesting a number of Europe’s top clubs, including both PSG and Atletico Madrid, as well as Premier League rivals Arsenal.
