Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld reckons his side didn’t deserve to lose against Man City tonight at Wembley.
City attacker Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game after just six minutes when he stroked home from close range after a Raheem Sterling cut back.
Pep Guardiola’s side squandered plenty of opportunities to kill the game off and it looked as if they would be made to pay for their wastefulness, but Spurs attacker Erik Lamela blasted a late chance over the bar when clean through on goal and City held on for the win.
Speaking after game Alderweireld felt his side had done enough to get something out of the game, while he also admitted the state of the pitch – which was badly cut up after Sunday’s NFL game – had stopped both teams performing at their best.
“I think we deserved more, we worked very hard, and we had a good opportunity but unfortunately we missed it so it’s frustrating.’’ The Belgian defender told Sky Sports.
“You don’t want to concede early against Man City but our response was good though and I thought we deserved more, as I’ve said.
“Harry Kane went through one on one with the goalkeeper and with a bit more luck there we could score and the game changes.
“I have to be honest, the pitch wasn’t good. Both teams like to play out from the back and to play football in these circumstances, it was very difficult.”
