Bielsa “Excited” for Wembley return as Uruguay face in-form England

Marcelo Bielsa has admitted he is “excited” to test his Uruguay side against the best in the world.

The former Leeds United manager prepares for a highly anticipated return to England tonight.

As a legendary figure in West Yorkshire, Bielsa ended the club’s 16-year top-flight exile. He will now lead La Celeste at Wembley Stadium in a marquee World Cup warm-up.

This fixture marks Bielsa’s first match on English soil since departing Elland Road in February 2022.

The 70-year-old remains undeterred by the challenge of facing Thomas Tuchel’s rampant Three Lions. Despite a humbling 5-1 defeat to the United States in their last outing, Bielsa welcomes the test.

Uruguay currently sit 17th in the FIFA world rankings, while their hosts occupy the fourth spot.

England became the first UEFA nation to secure their place in North America following a flawless qualifying campaign. Remarkably, they won all eight of their Group K matches without conceding a single goal.

“Every match is an opportunity,” Bielsa told reporters during Thursday’s pre-match press conference. “Playing against the best always excites me.”

He acknowledged the immense quality within the English squad but emphasised that such high-level tests are necessary to demand the absolute maximum from his players.

The clash at Wembley represents a significant tactical litmus test for both nations ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Under Thomas Tuchel, England have developed a formidable defensive resilience, keeping six consecutive clean sheets across all competitions.

If they prevent Uruguay from scoring tonight, they will equal the national team’s all-time record of seven straight shutouts.

Tuchel, however, remains wary of the threat posed by Bielsa’s “intoxicating” style of play. He noted that Uruguay’s stable qualification campaign—which included victories over Brazil and Argentina—proves they can compete with any global powerhouse.

Uruguay will look to Real Madrid star Federico Valverde to provide the creative spark in London.

Valverde has been in sensational form, netting six goals in his last five club appearances, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

Bielsa highlighted the midfielder’s newfound ability to “unbalance opponents” as a key weapon for La Celeste.

With the South Americans drawn alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia in World Cup Group H, tonight’s friendly offers a vital chance to refine their structure against elite European opposition.

This evening’s encounter is the first meeting between the two nations since the 2014 World Cup, where a Luis Suárez double famously eliminated England in the group stages.

Historically, the Three Lions have struggled in this fixture, holding just a 27% win ratio against the South Americans.

For Tuchel, the match provides an opportunity to reintegrate Ben White into the squad following a three-year absence. The defender was part of the Leeds team that won promotion under Bielsa in 2019-20.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7.45 pm GMT, with a sell-out crowd of 85,000 expected at the national stadium.
