Double Pivot? Rodri backs midfield partnership with Zubimendi

Spain captain Rodri has offered a fascinating tactical insight into the national team’s future by backing a potential partnership with Martin Zubimendi.

The Manchester City anchor and the Arsenal midfielder are widely considered among the premier defensive specialists in world football.

Speaking to Radioestadio Noche, Rodri addressed the growing debate regarding whether the two “pivotes” can coexist in the same starting line-up.

Rather than viewing the 27-year-old Zubimendi as a rival for his position, Rodri suggested that a “double pivot” could provide the foundation for World Cup glory.

Rodri elaborated on this potential shift by citing Spain’s historical success with a dual-midfield anchor. He noted that the national team previously won the 2010 World Cup by deploying both Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets simultaneously.

As per Onda Cero, Rodri believes that such structure offers defensive security without sacrificing technical progression.

He praised manager Luis de la Fuente’s ability to combine different profiles to suit high-pressure matches. This tactical flexibility allows Spain to adapt to elite opponents who thrive on transitional play.

The debate has intensified following Zubimendi’s exceptional form since his high-profile move to the Premier League last summer. Zubimendi has impressively filled the “number six” role during Rodri’s recent injury-enforced absence. While Rodri has returned to fitness, his recent displays for City suggest he is still finding his rhythm.

Consequently, a double pivot would allow both world-class operators to feature while easing the physical burden on the captain. Integrating Zubimendi alongside Rodri would provide the structural balance needed for the 2026 World Cup.

Rodri also reflected on how his period on the sidelines allowed him to “recharge” mentally after years of relentless competition. He remains confident that he will return to his world-class best during the season’s final stretch.

However, the rise of Zubimendi means De la Fuente now has a “luxury” selection headache in the engine room. Whether the manager chooses a single anchor or a dual-pivot remains the biggest question ahead of the summer. For now, the mutual respect between the two stars provides the foundation for Spain’s midfield dominance.
