The Premier League table doesn’t lie, we’re often told, but that’s not an assessment that Michael Owen necessarily believes in.
Owen has made a bold claim regarding who he views as ‘the best team’ in the division, in a take that will surprise many. Despite sitting sixth in the table and a whopping 19 points behind leaders Arsenal, Owen believes former side Liverpool are the league’s best outfit.
Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League title in 2024-25 but have been blighted by inconsistencies this time around. The Reds lost at Galatasaray in the Champions League in midweek, their 13th defeat of the campaign across all competitions.
However, discussing the top teams in the division, Owen stated his belief that Liverpool’s ‘best performance’ is better than those that can be produced by their Premier League peers.
“Personally, I think they’re [Liverpool] the best team in the Premier League,” Owen said.
“People will laugh but they trounced the league last season, they’re just not playing well. But if you get the best performance out of every team in the Premier League, and say ‘your best against your best’, I think Liverpool are the best team.”
