Scotland XI vs Greece – Predicted lineup and team news

Scotland heads to Greece looking to secure a vital result that would bring them closer to automatic qualification for the World Cup.

Facing a crucial challenge in Greece, Steve Clarke’s team is determined to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Sitting level on points with group leaders Denmark but trailing by six in goal difference, Scotland must take a positive result from Piraeus to keep their campaign on track. A draw in Greece followed by a win over Denmark at Hampden Park next week could see the Tartan Army qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Scotland has shown strong recent form, claiming wins over Belarus twice, drawing with Denmark, and most notably staging a memorable 3-1 comeback victory against Greece at Hampden in October.

The squad’s resilience and fighting spirit were on full display as they overturned a deficit to keep their qualification chances alive. This solid run has provided momentum heading into this important fixture.

Scotland team news

Billy Gilmour ruled out of the Greece match because of an adductor injury sustained while playing for Napoli. Assistant coach Steven Naismith remains hopeful, stating there is a realistic chance Gilmour could return for the critical Denmark game. Meanwhile, Lennon Miller and Ross McCrorie have been withdrawn from the squad due to injury, but replacements Connor Barron of Rangers and Andy Irving of West Ham have been called up.

In goal, veteran Craig Gordon—who has not featured competitively since last season at 42 years old—could get the nod ahead of Angus Gunn. The defensive line is expected to include Aaron Hickey,  with John Souttar and Scott McKenna featuring centrally, and Andrew Robertson at left-back. Midfield duties will fall to John McGinn and Kenny McLean, with Scott McTominay playing a creative role. Leading the frontline will be Torino’s Che Adams, supported by winger Ben Gannon Doak.
