African players with most combined goals and assists in World Cup history

Africa’s story at the FIFA World Cup is one of football’s most compelling narratives.

From the continent’s earliest appearances on the global stage to Morocco’s historic semi-final run in Qatar, African football has produced moments of brilliance, heartbreak, and pure theatre that have defined entire tournaments.

With ten African nations competing at the 2026 World Cup for the first time ever, the continent’s footprint on the global stage has never been larger. But which African players have contributed most to the beautiful game’s greatest tournament? Here are the African players with the most combined goals and assists in World Cup history.

African players with the most combined goals and assists in World Cup history

Asamoah Gyan | Ghana | 9 Goal Contributions (6 Goals, 3 Assists)

The record holder. The benchmark. The name every African striker is measured against. Asamoah Gyan is the undisputed king of African scorers in World Cup history, netting six goals across three tournaments between 2006 and 2014 — a record that has stood for over a decade.

His contributions ranged from Ghana’s very first World Cup goal against the Czech Republic in 2006, scored after just 68 seconds, to a string of decisive strikes at the 2010 tournament in South Africa, where his three goals helped the Black Stars reach the quarter-finals. Three assists across those same three tournaments bring his total contribution to nine — a figure no other African player has come close to matching.

Roger Milla | Cameroon | 6 Goal Contributions (5 Goals, 1 Assist)

Before Gyan, there was Milla. The Cameroonian icon became a global phenomenon at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, scoring four goals as the Indomitable Lions reached the quarter-finals — the furthest any African nation had gone at that point.

He was 38 years old, coming off the bench in every appearance, and his trademark celebrations by the corner flag became one of the enduring images of that tournament. He returned in 1994 to score against Russia, making him one of the oldest goalscorers in World Cup history at 42 years and 39 days old — a record that still stands.

Wahbi Khazri | Tunisia | 5 Goal Contributions (3 Goals, 2 Assists)

Not every World Cup legend arrives with fanfare. Wahbi Khazri built his reputation quietly but decisively, spreading three goals and two assists across the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and consistently delivering for Tunisia when the stakes were highest.

His performances helped the Eagles of Carthage punch above their weight at both tournaments, and his goal against France in 2022 — struck against the eventual champions — underlined his quality on the biggest stage. His five contributions place him joint third among Africa’s all-time World Cup contributors.

Mohamed Salah | Egypt | 5 Goal Contributions (3 Goals, 2 Assists)

Some records are made to be broken — and Salah looks determined to break them. The Egypt captain joined Africa’s elite World Cup contributors during the 2026 tournament, scoring once and providing an assist as Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 to reach three goals and two assists in total, drawing level with Khazri on five goal contributions.

The achievement is all the more notable given how limited Salah’s World Cup opportunities have been; Egypt’s group-stage exit in Russia 2018 restricted his appearances before this tournament. His form at 2026 edition suggests his tally is far from complete.
