Hibernian vs Rangers – Match Preview and Team News

  • Date: 29th October, Wednesday.
  • Kick-off: 8:45pm BST.
  • Venue: Easter Road Stadium, Edinburgh.

Hibernian Team News

Hibernian will be without captain Joe Newell, who remains sidelined with a groin injury that has kept him out since December 2024. Alasana Manneh is also unavailable due to a hamstring problem and is not expected to return until early November.

David Gray faces a potential concern over defender Warren O’Hora, who came off with a shoulder injury during the 2-1 victory at Aberdeen. However, Gray has confirmed the issue is “nothing too significant”. In a further blow, midfielder Dylan Levitt has undergone surgery for an appendix problem and will miss the match. Rudi Molotnikov is out for up to eight weeks with an ankle injury.

The Hibees will look to the twin attacking threat of Kieron Bowie and Thibault Klidje, who have been in excellent form recently. Klidje has scored in his last two league appearances, including the opener against Aberdeen, while Bowie has been a constant menace to opposition defences with his pace and movement.

Rangers Team News

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has minimal injury concerns heading into the Easter Road clash. The German confirmed that Dujon Sterling remains out until the new year with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while Rabbi Matondo continues his recovery from a knee injury.

The positive news for the Gers is that Rohl has no fresh injury problems following their 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock. The manager could opt for a similar starting XI that delivered his first domestic win in charge.

Derek Cornelius opened the scoring against Kilmarnock and has impressed at the heart of Rangers’ defence. Brazilian striker Danilo ended his goal drought with a crucial header, netting his first Premiership goal since January against Celtic. Most significantly, Youssef Chermiti finally opened his Rangers account with his first goal since May, relieving the pressure on the £8 million signing from Everton.

Mohamed Diomande produced a standout performance against Kilmarnock, winning two tackles and making two interceptions – more than any other player on the pitch. His energetic display in midfield has potentially saved his Ibrox career after a difficult start to the season.

Form

Hibernian

David Gray’s side have hit their stride with back-to-back league victories, climbing to third place in the Scottish Premiership. The Hibees thrashed Livingston 4-0 at Easter Road before securing a battling 2-1 away win at Aberdeen.

The win at Pittodrie was particularly impressive, with Hibs showing resilience after creating numerous chances. Thibault Klidje opened the scoring in the first half before substitute Elie Youan sealed the victory with a late goal, running from the halfway line and beating two defenders.

Hibernian currently sit third in the table with 14 points from nine matches, boasting a goal difference of +5.

Rangers

Danny Rohl secured his first victory as Rangers manager with a much-needed 3-1 home win over Kilmarnock. The result came just three days after a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Brann in the Europa League, which marked a disastrous start to Rohl’s tenure.

The 36-year-old German made bold tactical changes for the Kilmarnock match, switching to a 3-5-2 formation and making several personnel changes. The new system provided more width through wing-backs Jayden Meghoma and Djeidi Gassama, while playing two strikers up front created more attacking threat.

Rangers currently occupy fifth place in the Scottish Premiership with 12 points from nine matches, but remain 13 points behind runaway leaders Hearts. The Gers have managed just two league wins this season and desperately need to string together consecutive victories to mount any realistic challenge.

Predicted Lineups

Hibernian: Sallinger; Kiranga, Hanley, Iredale; C Cadden, Mulligan, Barlaser, N Cadden; McGrath; Bowie, Klidje.

Rangers: Butland; Tavernier, Souttar, Cornelius; Gassama, Raskin, Diomande, Aasgaard, Meghoma; Danilo, Miovski.
