Wirtz admits Liverpool couldn’t stop Fulham wonder goal

Florian Wirtz has admitted that Fulham’s late equaliser against Liverpool was a goal no goalkeeper could save.

Liverpool’s hopes of a top-four finish were dented after Harrison Reed scored a stunning stoppage-time equaliser for Fulham at Craven Cottage.

After Harry Wilson and Wirtz had exchanged goals, Liverpool looked to have won it when Cody Gakpo bundled the Reds ahead in stoppage time.

However, a wonder goal from substitute Reed saw the spoils shared, as the midfielder blasted into the top corner from distance.

Wirtz said Liverpool were disappointed after a second straight Premier League draw, but conceded there was little that could be done to stop Reed’s incredible effort.

“Not satisfied at all. We need points and we wanted three points today. We know there’s no easy game in this league,” Wirtz said to Sky Sports.

“The intensity we brought on the pitch in the second half was much better. We didn’t press them well in the first half but the second half was much better.

“I was sure it was offside so I didn’t even celebrate. I was happy that I scored but I’d rather take the three points.

“The strike, there is nothing to say. It was unbelievable. You cannot save that ball. Normally, it doesn’t go in like this. The actions before could have been better, I’m not sure. It was from a throw-in, so we have to be better.

“Again, we are in a difficult situation because we drew two times. It’s not what we want, we want more. We have to get better but it’s still a process.”
