Sunderland XI vs Newcastle United – Predicted lineup and team news

Sunderland travel to St James’ Park tonight, aiming to secure a historic double over Newcastle and extend their unbeaten derby run to a record-breaking 11 matches.

The Black Cats have moved back into the Premier League with mid-table stability under manager Régis Le Bris, who oversaw a 1–0 win in the reverse fixture back in December.

Sunderland are currently unbeaten in 10 league games against the Magpies. It is the longest such run in the fixture’s history.

Now they will be looking to exploit a Newcastle side that has already dropped 12 points more than them from winning positions this season.

Sunderland team news

Régis Le Bris manages a squad dealing with several defensive and creative uncertainties. Notably, midfielders Enzo Le Fée and Reinildo Mandava are expected to be available, but Dan Ballard and Nordi Mukiele remain doubtful.

Consequently, if Ballard misses out, Luke O’Nien is set to anchor a defence that has recorded the second-most blocks in the Premier League this season.

Notably, Brian Brobbey leads the line as the team’s top league scorer with five goals, as the visitors look to break a recent scoring drought that has seen them net just four goals in eight matches.

Melker Ellborg is poised to start in goal if Robin Roefs remains unfit. The back four will likely feature Lutsharel Geertruida and the returning Reinildo.

Granit Xhaka and Mouhamadou Diarra will provide the experienced engine room.

Notably, Sunderland have avoided defeat in seven games when conceding the first goal this season, a record only bettered by Brighton.

They will rely on that resilience should Newcastle strike early in front of a raucous home crowd.
