Portugal vs Ireland – Predicted lineup and team news

Portugal are set to welcome the Republic of Ireland to Lisbon’s Estádio José Alvalade this evening.

This crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier is a chance for Roberto Martínez’s men to continue their flawless start to the campaign.

Portugal Team News

Portugal are missing a key midfielder, as PSG’s João Neves has pulled out with a left thigh injury. The decision came after assessments by both the Portuguese and PSG medical teams. Consequently, Lazio’s Nuno Tavares has been called into the squad as a replacement. The team are also still without João Cancelo, who remains sidelined.

In defence, Nelson Semedo and Diogo Dalot will provide cover on the right flank, with Nuno Mendes likely to start on the left. In the middle, Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha will orchestrate the midfield. Up front, veteran Cristiano Ronaldo is set to spearhead the attack. The 40-year-old is in fine form, having netted three goals in two qualifiers, and also boasts a strong record against Ireland.

The squad are further boosted by the return of Matheus Nunes and Rafael Leão. With their help, Portugal will aim to secure a fourth consecutive win in the qualifiers. This victory would confirm their place at the top of the group and seal direct qualification for next year’s World Cup.

This strong qualifying run continues their excellent recent form. Earlier this year, they lifted the Nations League trophy after defeating Spain and have carried that momentum into this campaign, starting with two convincing wins.
