Newcastle United vs Fulham – Predicted lineup and team news

Newcastle United welcome Fulham to St James’ Park on Saturday needing to address a worrying trend against the Cottagers and build on their midweek European success.

Fulham completed a league double over the Magpies last season. Notably, this included a 2-1 victory here at St James’ Park. Consequently, manager Eddie Howe will demand a strong domestic response from his team today. This follows their vital 3-0 Champions League win over Benfica midweek.

Despite boasting the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League, Newcastle have struggled for attacking consistency recently. For instance, they lost away at Brighton last weekend. However, the comprehensive victory against Benfica certainly provided a timely confidence boost. Therefore, Howe hopes that confidence translates into a much-needed domestic win. Striker Nick Woltemade, in particular, will aim to continue the impressive start to his Newcastle career.

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe reported no new injury concerns following the midweek win over Benfica. His main doubt, however, involves midfielder Sandro Tonali. The Italian is currently rated “touch and go” for the match due to illness. Consequently, Jacob Ramsey or Joe Willock could deputise if Tonali is unavailable. Either player would likely feature alongside Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton in midfield.

The defence remains somewhat depleted. Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are still out through injury. On a positive note, Fabian Schär is fit again and pushing hard for a recall to the starting XI. Meanwhile, up front, Nick Woltemade aims to continue his fine goalscoring form. He has impressively scored four goals in his first five Premier League games. Therefore, another goal today would see him join an elite group. He would become one of only a few Newcastle players to reach five goals in six or fewer appearances. Harvey Barnes, who scored an impressive brace against Benfica, could also push for a much-needed start.
