Jean-Philippe Mateta had a day to remember after scoring a hat-trick in Crystal Palace’s 3-3 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.
Mateta helped Palace twice fight back to earn a point at Selhurst Park, equalising with his hat-trick goal in the 97th minute.
Incredibly, the Frenchman had a glorious chance to win the game just moments later but blazed over the bar when well placed. Despite his match ball, the 28-year-old admitted he was ‘upset’ not to win the game for the Eagles.
Mateta’s huge involvement in the game has also seen the newly-capped France international break a Premier League record.
The 3.67 xG he managed was the highest ever by a player in a Premier League game, since the data was first collected 10 seasons ago. He’s also the first player in history to score a hat-trick and underperform on the metric.

Mateta’s 3.67 xG eclipsed the previous record, held by former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette.
The French forward recorded an xG of 2.97 in a 2017 clash with Manchester United, but could only score once as the Gunners fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates. That fixture is best remembered for a brilliant shot-stopping performance from United ‘keeper David de Gea.
Another ex-Arsenal name, Alexis Sanchez, ranks third after notching up 2.89 xG against Hull City in the same year.
