Enzo Maresca says he is “absolutely” committed to Chelsea, but refused to elaborate on his claim that he experienced the “worst 48 hours” of his time at the club last week.
The Italian delivered a cryptic complaint in his post-match press conference after the Blues’ 2-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
“The way the players want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I praise them, because with so many problems, they are doing very well after a complicated week,” Maresca said.
“Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people didn’t support us.”
Asked to explain what he meant, he replied: “Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn’t support me and the team.”
Maresca did not point fingers at anyone inside the club, telling reporters that he was talking about people “in general”. When asked if it was aimed at the fans or the media, he clarified: “I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans.”
The comments were inevitably raised at Monday’s press conference ahead of Chelsea’s League Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City, but Maresca had nothing more to say on the matter.
“I already spoke about that,” he said. “I have nothing to add. Cardiff tomorrow please.
“I already spoke about it and I was quite clear. No more than that. My focus is on tomorrow’s game and reaching the semi-final.”
“I said after the game that I love Chelsea’s supporters. They deserve the best.”
Maresca reiterated his stance when more questions about his unexpected rant were raised.
“I can speak Italian, my language, Spanish very well, French and English. I think I was clear with what I said,” he added.
“When I want to say something, I am quite clear. It is finished. I said what I said after the game. It’s finished.”
