Manchester United add left-back to summer wish-list

Manchester United are planning to sign a left-back in the summer amid the expected return of European football.

Michael Carrick’s side are third in the Premier League table and took a giant step towards Champions League football with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa last weekend.

United have won seven of their nine games under the interim coach and are the form team heading into the top-four run-in.

Plans are already beginning to formulate for the summer transfer window. The signing of at least one new midfielder is the priority, with an expectation that two midfielders will arrive at Old Trafford.

Premier League experience is being sought with Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali and Joao Gomes all linked of late.

In addition, United want to sign a left-back. Luke Shaw has impressed under Carrick and is expected to earn an England recall this month. However, the 30-year-old’s patchy fitness record is a concern.

Aided by the absence of Europe this season, Shaw has started all 30 league games this season, though it’s only the third time he has done so in 12 seasons at Old Trafford.

While there’s no desire to offload Shaw, competition and cover will be sought. talkSPORT are reporting that there are reservations about Shaw’s body being able to handle the increased demand of Champions League football.
