Liverpool remain the favourites to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace despite rival interest from Barcelona.
Guehi’s contract at Crystal Palace expires at the end of the season, when he will be available to move clubs as a free agent.
Liverpool agreed a £35m deal to sign the England international in the summer, but the transfer collapsed on deadline day as Palace failed to secure a replacement in time.
The Premier League champions retain their interest in signing the 25-year-old, either in January or at the conclusion of the campaign.
Barcelona are ready to rival the Reds’ interest in Guehi. Spanish outlet Cadena SER are reporting that Barcelona are interested in a deal to sign Guehi, but consider Liverpool frontrunners. The Spanish champions view Guehi as a real market opportunity, particularly given the club’s well-documented economic issues.
Barcelona have made the signing of a centre-back a priority, following Inigo MartÃnez’s departure to Saudi Arabia last summer. Neither Andres Christensen, Ronald Araujo or Eric Garcia have earned Hansi Flick’s full trust, as he seeks a long-term partner to Pau Cubarsi.
The belief from within Barca, however, is that Liverpool’s move for Guehi – all but completed in the summer – remains the likeliest outcome.
