Liverpool line up Gerrard as next manager due to ‘growing belief’ that Klopp will take Germany job

Liverpool are reportedly lining up Steven Gerrard as the club’s next manager, amid suggestions that current boss Jurgen Klopp will take the Germany job.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has been a sensation at Anfield since taking the job in late 2015, helping guide the club to a Champions League and Premier League title over the last few seasons.

After their sensational title win last term, however, this campaign has seen the champions fall way short of their usual high standards, with the Reds currently in sixth and 22 points behind leaders Manchester City.

A run of four successive league defeats has left Klopp’s men in a real scrap to qualify for the Champions League, in what’s been a dismal title defence thus far.

Amid their current slump, there have been suggestions that the Liverpool boss could well leave the club, the Mirror reporting that there is a ‘growing belief’ at Anfield that the 53-year-old will take the German national team job, with Steven Gerrard being lined up to replace him.

Current Germany boss Joachim Low has been in charge since 2006 and was at the helm for their 2014 World Cup triumph, yet since then, Die Mannschaft have endured a group stage exit from the 2018 World Cup and two dismal Nations League performances.

While Low is set to remain as manager for the upcoming European Championships, another below-par showing this summer may well spell the end of his time in charge, with Klopp the ‘outstanding candidate’ to replace him.

With the German potentially leaving the club, the Reds are looking at former captain, Gerrard as the man to take his place, the 40-year-old currently enjoying a fine season in charge of Rangers.

The Scottish Premiership side are set to clinch a first top-flight league title since 2011 and end Celtic’s dominance after a so far unbeaten campaign, while they also secured a place in the Europa League last-16 this week with a thrilling two-legged tie against Royal Antwerp.

Gerrard has long been touted as a potential successor to Klopp in the future, although that possibility could come a lot sooner if the current Anfield boss decides to move into international management.
