Igor Thiago has announced himself as a Premier League player this season, with the Brentford forward having netted 14 times in the league.
Thiago has filled the goalscoring void left by the summer departures of Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, bouncing back from an injury-hit debut season with Brentford in style.
The 24-year-old scored a hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-2 win at Everton to continue his rich vein of form. He trails only Erling Haaland for goals this season and has averaged a Premier League goal every 119 minutes.
The Brazilian is pushing for a first international call-up ahead of March’s fixtures, while he’s also nearing a record. Thiago is now just one goal from matching the record for Premier League goals in a single season by a Brazilian player.
The 15-goal record is currently shared by three Samba stars. Roberto Firmino was first to reach the mark after netting 15 times for Liverpool in 2017/18.
In 2022/23, Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli matched Firmino’s haul, before Matheus Cunha levelled it while playing for Wolves last season. Cunha reached the 15-goal mark in the fewest games, after making just 33 appearances.
Thiago now needs just two goals to take the record outright, a considerable achievement given the quality of his compatriots to have played in English football.
