Howe hails Wissa as summer signing stars in PSV win

Eddie Howe has hailed Yoane Wissa following the forward’s role in Newcastle’s 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

Newcastle climbed into the Champions League’s top eight with an emphatic victory over the Dutch champions at St James’ Park.

Wissa was outstanding in the win over PSV, opening the scoring inside eight minutes for the home side. He turned provider for the second, winning back possession in a dangerous area before squaring for Anthony Gordon to double the lead.

Wissa’s intelligent run then opened up the space for Harvey Barnes to add a third after half-time, in a performance that was met by praise from head coach Howe.

The DR Congo striker has had a tough time since his £55m move from Brentford in the summer, missing much of the campaign through injury.

“It’s been a tough start for him here,” Howe said.

“For any new player to come and get a serious injury, having not even done a training session, that’s really tough mentally.

“So it’s taken us a while to get him to a level that’s close to his best, and I still feel he’s got some more to come.

“A big night for him tonight because in part that’s why he came to the club – for these nights – and I’m just pleased that he’s made a positive impact.

“Yoane’s career at Brentford was brilliant to watch from afar because I thought he was outstanding for them, scoring a number of massive goals,” Howe said.

“I loved his attitude and the way that he played, the determination and aggression that he played with.”
