Harry Maguire: Man Utd ‘won’t get carried away’ with Liverpool win

Harry Maguire says Man Utd’s win over Liverpool “means everything” to him, but promised the team won’t get carried

The Red Devils took a shock lead just over a minute into the game when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a mistake at the back to fire in the opener at the Kop end. Virgil van Dijk took out teammate Alexis Mac Allister in an attempt to win a header, but failed to win possession as Amad Diallo played Mbeumo in.

After hitting the woodwork three times, Cody Gakpo finally found an equaliser from close range in the 78th minute, sparking hopes of the kind of late winner that was so common in the early weeks of the season.

But it was United who found the next goal. Bruno Fernandes volley a dangerous ball into the box for Harry Maguire, making just his third Premier League start this term, to head home.

The visitors held on to complete back-to-back league victories for the first time during Ruben Amorim’s reign and their first win at Anfield since 2016, while Liverpool suffered defeat for a fourth successive time in all competitions.

“It means everything,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “They had had the better of us over the last few years and it’s not been good for our club. We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.

“It is not just three points to the club and to the boys. I have been coming to this ground for seven years now and to not get three points have been tough. It’s for the fans and I hope they had a great night tonight.

“It is nice to have one over Liverpool. Football is all about memories and making special memories. I am sure all the fans will go home with memories, we will all go home happy.”

Maguire added: “We won’t get carried away because we can’t afford that as a club, we will use it as motivation.

“In this club, it will mean a lot this week and then we have Brighton at home next week. So we have to remain calm headed.”
