Frank confident of avoiding Spurs sack despite relegation fears

Thomas Frank is confident he will not be sacked at Tottenham despite the looming threat of relegation.

Spurs stretched their winless run to eight Premier League games after losing 2-1 to Newcastle United on Tuesday night. Archie Gray had cancelled out Malick Thiaw’s opener for Newcastle, but the visitors found a winner through Jacob Ramsey.

The defeat leaves Spurs 16th in the table and just five points above the relegation places. Spurs are one of six teams to have never been relegated from the Premier League, but have been dragged into a survival fight in recent weeks. Despite that, Frank insists he still has the backing of the club’s owners.

“I spoke to them [the owners] yesterday, so no,” Frank said to TNT Sports when asked if his job was under threat.

“I understand the frustration and the easiest thing is to point at me. That’s part of the job unfortunately.

“I will work day and night to turn this around but it is not just one person. There is no doubt we need to improve and I need to be part of that.”

Tottenham were again subjected to boos from the home crowd, who have become increasingly frustrated by the club’s situation. Last season, under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs finished 17th, the club’s lowest league finish since relegation in the seventies.

“I understand the frustration. It has been building up a little bit – last season it was similar playing in Europe and the Premier League,” Frank said.

“We need to be resilient, mentally and physically. I am 100% sure that it is a team effort, and it is not only one person. We are all aligned and we know what needs to be done.”
