Phil Foden has said his Manchester Derby double ‘means everything’ and has opened up on his desire to be known as a big game player.
Foden scored twice as Manchester City came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad, with the midfielder continuing his fine form with a match-winning performance at the Etihad.
Marcus Rashford had fired the visitors in front with a thumping effort in off the underside of the crossbar, but City’s dominance told in the second half. Foden cut inside to lash an equaliser into the top corner, before an interchange with Julian Alvarez saw the 23-year-old rifle in a second.
Sofyan Amrabat’s error allowed Erling Haaland in to score a third for the Citizens in stoppage time, as Pep Guardiola’s team maintained their push for the Premier League title.
Foden continued his excellent recent record in this fixture and has now scored six goals in his last four Manchester Derby appearances. The England international was delighted with contribution as City secured bragging rights and an important three points.
“My aim is to turn up in the big games. That is what I want to do and I think this season I am proving that. I just need to keep working hard,” Foden, who has now scored 18 goals this season, said to Sky Sports.
“I understand what it means for the fans – a derby at the Etihad. It means everything for me, to score as well is even better but it was about the win today.”
Manchester City captain Kyle Walked hailed Foden’s performance and said the midfielder is a player the Citizens ‘lean on’ in big games.
“This season he has been nothing short of first class. That is the standard he sets for himself and we set for him. It is the standard he needs to keep up now,” Walker said.
“When he comes in on his left foot we call him the sniper because he likes to shoot. When he comes in on the left foot you know he has the calmness and composure to pick his spot.
“We lean on him. We need important players like him because they help you win games.
“He puts the work in, he is always doing extra shooting. His goals are coming in, he is reaping the rewards and he needs to keep these standards up.”
