Six early Premier League transfers to expect in January window

The January transfer window is officially open and a number of Premier League clubs are looking to get their business done early.

It can be a dicey time to sign new players, but whether you are fighting for the title, looking to contend for the European places, or battling relegation, it can be a necessity.

Here are some of the deals that are on the verge of completion in the first couple of days of the winter window.

Six early Premier League transfers to expect in January window:

Antoine Semenyo – Bournemouth to Man City

The likely biggest deal of the window is set to get done inside the first week of the month, although there might be a cheeky delay.

Manchester City are on the verge of activating Antoine Semenyo’s £65 million release clause and capture him from Bournemouth after an excellent start to the season. Liverpool were also interested in the winger, while Chelsea pulled out of the running last week.

It was thought that Semenyo had played his last game for the club in this week’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea, but Andoni Iraola insists that he will feature this weekend against Arsenal – who just happen to be City’s title rivals.

Brennan Johnson – Spurs to Crystal Palace

Despite being one of the few Spurs players to come away from last season with any credit and scoring the winning goal in the UEFA Europa League final, Brennan Johnson is heading out the door.

A £35 million deal has been agreed with Crystal Palace, who are looking to bolster their attacking options during a hectic period for the Eagles. With Bournemouth also said to be interested in Johnson, the winger has been mulling over his future – but has now decided he wants to move across the Thames to Selhurst Park.

Joel Ordonez – Club Brugge to Liverpool

Liverpool are hoping to fix a problem position this month, with the Reds reportedly closing in on a deal worth up to £43m for Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez.

The Ecuadorian will add much needed depth to a defence that only has two fit centre-halves after Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury last month. Giovanni Leoni was signed from Parma in the summer but he is recovering from an ACL injury.

Ordonez’ arrival would throw into doubt the possibility of Marc Guehi moving to Anfield from Crystal Palace this month, but it is possible Liverpool will return for the England international at the end of the season and sign him on a free transfer. Ordonez would arrive as one for the future, while Guehi could come in as a replacement for Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires this year.

Pascal Gross – Borussia Dortmund to Brighton

Brighton are reportedly in talks with Borussia Dortmund to re-sign Pascal Gross for as little as £1m. The midfielder spent seven years with the Seagulls before joining the German outfit in 2024, but he looks set to return in the next few days. Brighton are also said to be interested in FC Nordsjaelland’s Caleb Yirenkyi.

Pablo – Gil Vicente to West Ham United

No waste in motion from West Ham, who are desperate to improve their squad and boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.

With Niclas Fullkrug expected to leave the club this month and Callum Wilson only a bit-part player, the Hammers are looking to add firepower to their ranks.

Gil Vicente striker Pablo is reportedly due to undergo a medical on Thursday ahead of completing a £20m move. West Ham hope to get the deal done in time to register him for Saturday’s trip to Wolves. The 21-year-old has scored 10 goals in 13 Primeira Liga matches this season.

Meanwhile, the east London outfit are also hoping to offload Luis Guilherme soon, with Sporting CP reportedly opening talks on a potential £17.5m deal. The winger, who has played just five times this season, looks set to be on his way out as Nuno Espirito Santo hopes to bring in Adama Traore from Fulham.
