Maresca suggests potential Palmer surgery amid injury issue

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has suggested that Cole Palmer could require surgery to fix an ongoing injury issue.

Palmer has played just 145 minutes of Premier League football this season as the midfielder deals with an ongoing groin complaint.

The 23-year-old was substituted during the first half of the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday evening. After the game, Maresca admitted that Palmer was not ‘100% fit’.

Speaking ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup tie at Lincoln City tomorrow night, Maresca revealed that Chelsea’s medical staff are considering surgery.

“It’s more day by day, week by week, game by game,” Maresca said his pre-match press conference when discussing Palmer’s condition.

“The medical staff, they didn’t mention to me about surgery until today. I don’t know… but I don’t think so, to be honest”.

“He already made a huge effort last Saturday to try and play the game. He tried Saturday morning. He was not 100 per cent, but he wanted to be there to help his team-mates in that kind of game. It was painful [for him], so we decided to change. We await day by day to see how he is and then decide what we do.”
