Bruno Guimaraes has said he never wanted to leave Newcastle this summer and wants to put his ‘name in the club’s history’.
Guimaraes has been linked with an exit from Newcastle with several top sides taking an interest in the Brazilian, who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most influential footballers at St James’ Park.
Manchester City have been heavily linked with the 26-year-old, while Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been named as admirers. Guimaraes had a £100m release clause in his contract that has since expired but insists he never expressed a desire to leave the North East.
“I’m very happy at Newcastle, I never said I would like to leave,” Guimaraes said in comments published by Fabrizio Romano.
“I always said I would like to put my name in the club’s history. I can’t wait to do my best for the club and the fans.”
Guimaraes has been handed the captain’s armband during the club’s pre-season tour and reaffirmed his ‘love’ for the Magpies and determination to succeed with Eddie Howe’s side.
“It was very special to captain the club I love so much. I captained the team against Tottenham in Australia too, but this game was my first start as a captain,” he told the club’s official website.
“Everyone knows what the club means to me, so I will keep this match forever in my mind.
“I want to be a leader in the group and give even more for the club than before, because they’ve given me so much. I just want the club to be as big as possible, and to help however I can.”
