Aston Villa travel to Anfield today as one of the Premier League’s most in-form teams. Unai Emery’s side have impressively won their last four consecutive league games.
This strong run has completely turned their season around after a winless start. In addition, their latest victory, a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester City, has filled the squad with belief. Villa now have the chance to achieve a rare feat.
A win over Liverpool would make them the first team since 2016 to beat Manchester City and Liverpool in consecutive matches. However, they face a historically difficult challenge. Villa have won just one of their last 30 away trips to a reigning league champion.
Aston Villa team news
Unai Emery has been handed a fresh injury blow. He confirmed that Emi Buendía will miss the trip to Liverpool. The attacking midfielder was forced off with a foot injury during last weekend’s win over Manchester City. While the issue is not thought to be serious, he is not available for the match at Anfield.
Villa’s selection is further complicated. Harvey Elliott is ineligible to play against his parent club. The team also remain without Youri Tielemans and long-term absentee Andrés García. However, Emery confirmed Tielemans is progressing well and should return to training next week. In more positive news for the manager, star striker Ollie Watkins is fit and available to lead the attack.
