Arsenal travel to Liverpool on Saturday night looking to secure the Christmas number one spot.
Currently, Mikel Arteta’s side sit two points clear at the top of the table. However, they must overcome a tricky away fixture against an Everton side that often raises its game against them.
Although the Gunners proved resilient this season, they displayed vulnerability on the road recently as they conceded the first goal in their last three away matches. Because key defenders remain out, Arteta needs his makeshift backline to stay solid if they hope to leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium with all three points.
Arsenal team news
Regrettably, Mikel Arteta confirmed that Ben White will miss “a few games” with a hamstring injury. Consequently, this absence leaves Jurrien Timber as the only senior option at right-back. Fortunately, Riccardo Calafiori returns from suspension and will likely slot straight back into the left side of the defence.
In central defence, Gabriel Magalhães remains out, so Piero Hincapié looks set to partner William Saliba. In midfield, Martin Zubimendi stands fit to start alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Up front, Arteta hinted that Mikel Merino remains an option, but Viktor Gyökeres looks the favourite to start while Bukayo Saka and the in-form Leandro Trossard flank him.
