Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set his sights on breaking Chelsea’s record for the fewest goals conceded in a Premier League season.
The North Londoners have conceded just three times in their opening eight games of the season, with just one of those coming from open play. It’s a hugely impressive statistic for Arsenal, who have emerged as arguably Europe’s best defensive side.
At their current rate, Arsenal could end the Premier League season with just 14 goals conceded, breaking a famous record held by London rivals Chelsea. The Blues allowed in just 15 goals during their 2004/05 title-winning campaign under Jose Mourinho.

Arteta admits Arsenal will be well positioned to claim the biggest possible trophies if his team can get close – or break – that record.
“Those kind of records bring silverware at the end and the trophies that we want. The more we can produce, the closer we will be,” he said ahead of facing Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend.
“The aim is to continue improving things.”
Arteta added that his team have been unfortunate in recent seasons, having boasted the Premier League’s best defensive record in three consecutive campaigns.
“The teams with the best defensive records most of the time, except the past three seasons, normally win the league – so the stats go against us.
“The stronger we are in foundation, the better chance we have.”
