Slot says former Liverpool star was ‘right’ to leave Anfield

Arne Slot has said Caoimhín Kelleher was ‘right’ to leave Liverpool for Brentford in the summer.

Liverpool will come face-to-face with their former goalkeeper when the teams meet in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Kelleher made 67 senior appearances for the Reds and was an important part of recent cup successes, but chose to leave for a first-team role after failing to dislodge Alisson Becker at Anfield.

The Republic of Ireland international joined Brentford in a deal that could reach £18.5m and has impressed since his arrival in West London.

Slot believes the decision was ‘right’ for Kelleher’s career, with the 26-year-old embracing his new role as a first-choice at Brentford.

“Maybe a goalkeeper is an exception, but in general I don’t think it’s a healthy situation for a player to be on the bench longer than a year or miss out on many games in a year and then go into a next season,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

“It’s so hard for them to keep giving everything on a daily basis. So, that was also one of the reasons why we thought it was best for Jarell Quansah, for Harvey Elliott to find another club.

“For Caoimh, like I said, goalkeepers are a bit of an exception, but he did this for so many years that he felt it was time for him to start playing – and he has shown that he is right because he is doing really well.”
