‘Angry’ Man Utd players hold ’emergency meeting’ with Ed Woodward over ESL plans

Manchester United players have held an ’emergency meeting’ with Ed Woodward having been left angered by the club’s plans to join a breakaway European Super League.

Several members of the squad are understood to be ‘angry’ after discovering the Red Devils’ intentions through the media on Sunday, with United one of 12 clubs confirmed as founding members of a controversial breakaway tournament involving Europe’s elite.

United have been joined by each of the Premier League’s ‘top six’ clubs – Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal – in announcing their participation in the competition, alongside leading sides from both Spain and Italy.

The proposals have been met with almost unanimous backlash from supporters and governing bodies, with several leading figures within the game having spoken out against the concept of a competition that will essentially operate as a self-serving closed shop for world football’s wealthiest.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp have been two of the notable names to have faced awkward questioning over the plans, with managers and players having been left in the dark by owners who stand on the verge of making unwanted and potentially catastrophic changes to the game.

According to the Mail, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has now held talks with the Manchester United dressing room who have been left angered by their lack of information from the board, as the ownerships of ‘top six’ sides have left their uninformed managers and players to face the media backlash.

Woodward is believed to have informed the squad that the club were operating within their best interests but is understood to have received a ‘lukewarm’ reaction from the players.

The news of the meeting comes after midfielder Bruno Fernandes made his feelings known on a European Super League, reposting a social media post from Wolves’ winger Daniel Podence featuring Champions League highlights and commenting ‘Dreams can’t be bought’.

The European Super League will threaten the existence of UEFA’s Champions League and has been greeted with condemnation from Europe’s governing body, with president Aleksander Ceferin branding Woodward a ‘snake’ for his involvement in the breakaway plans – having received positive feedback from the Manchester United chief on Champions League reform plans.
