Silva refuses to blame Pickford after Merseyside Derby howler

Everton manager Marco Silva refused to blame goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his sides 1-0 loss to Liverpool today in the Merseyside Derby.

The 233rd edition of the Merseyside Derby looked like it was heading for a goalless draw, until a bizarre howler from Everton ‘keeper Jordan Pickford saw the ball twice rebound off the crossbar and fall into the path of substitute Divock Origi who headed home from barely a yard out in the 96th minute.

After the game Toffees boss Silva was asked if he had ever seen an incident like the one that lead to Origi’s goal and whether he thought Pickford could have reacted differently, to which the Portuguese coach replied:

“It is the first time but football gives us new things every day,” Silva told Sky Sports.

“We will analyse the moment with Jordan, it was a bad moment for him. But I told him he has done many amazing things. It was a lucky day for Liverpool.”
