Sweden vs Tunisia – Predicted lineup and team news

Sweden begin their World Cup return against Tunisia at Estadio Monterrey on Sunday.

The Swedes are making their 13th appearance at the prestigious global showpiece. They hope to replicate their impressive run to the 2018 quarter-finals. Graham Potter has brilliantly revived the national team following a disastrous initial qualifying phase.

The Blue and Yellow finished bottom of their qualifying group under Jon Dahl Tomasson. Eventually, they secured their tournament ticket through the UEFA playoffs thanks to their Nations League ranking.

Potter brings renewed tactical confidence to a squad brimming with elite attacking talent. Sweden have progressed beyond the group stage in their last four World Cup appearances. They have lost just two of their 12 opening World Cup matches in history.

Their last opening defeat occurred against Brazil way back in 1990. The European outfit must overcome defensive frailties after conceding in 11 consecutive fixtures. They face a resilient Tunisian side that did not concede during African qualifying.

Sweden team news

Graham Potter enters the tournament opener with a highly positive overall medical bulletin. The manager reports almost no injury concerns within his vibrant 26-man tournament squad. Defender Emil Holm represents the only confirmed absentee after withdrawing before the tournament began.

Leeds United full-back Gabriel Gudmundsson remains a minor doubt after battling a severe virus. He will undergo a late fitness evaluation to determine his starting availability on Sunday.

Daniel Svensson or Elliot Stroud stand ready to provide immediate cover out wide. Victor Lindelof has fully recovered from a minor affliction to anchor the Swedish defence. Anthony Elanga, Benjamin Nygren, and Alexander Bernhardsson have also shaken off slight physical issues.

Lindelof will operate centrally within a flexible three-man defensive unit. Isak Hien and Gustaf Lagerbielke are expected to partner the highly experienced defender. Kristoffer Nordfeldt should start between the posts behind the central defensive trio.

Jesper Karlstrom and Yasin Ayari will dictate the tempo from the midfield engine room. Nygren should occupy the advanced playmaker role to link the midfield and attack. Viktor Gyökeres arrives in spectacular form after carrying Sweden through the tense qualification playoffs.

The powerful striker scored a hat-trick against Ukraine before netting the winner against Poland. He has successfully converted his last 29 penalties for club and country. Alexander Isak will partner Gyökeres to form a truly lethal attacking partnership.

Sweden predicted lineup

Sweden predicted XI: Nordfeldt; Hien, Lindelof, Lagerbielke; Bernhardsson, Karlstrom, Ayari, Gudmundsson; Nygren; Gyokeres, Isak.
