Haiti travel to North America for the FIFA World Cup this summer, embarking on only their second appearance at the tournament — and their first in 52 years.
Sébastien Migné’s side produced a remarkable qualification campaign under extraordinary circumstances, completing the entire CONCACAF third-round qualifying process without playing a single match on home soil due to ongoing political instability and security concerns back in Haiti.
Instead, Les Grenadiers hosted their fixtures in Curaçao, with Migné — a French manager who has never set foot in Haiti — guiding the team to the top of their group ahead of Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Haiti’s only previous World Cup came in West Germany in 1974, where the nation caught the world’s attention when Emmanuel Sanon’s goal against Italy ended legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff’s long unbeaten international record.
Five decades on, Les Grenadiers will be hoping to write a far more substantial chapter in their footballing history.
Haiti have been drawn in Group C at the tournament, where five-time world champions Brazil, 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, and Scotland await in opposition.
