Carrick comments on Man Utd future after ‘massive’ win over Chelsea

Michael Carrick says his future as Man Utd head coach is “out of his hands” after leading his side to victory at Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Red Devils picked up three valuable points at Stamford Bridge thanks to Matheus Cunha, who scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

The result strengthens United’s grip on third place and, more importantly, enhances their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

“I can’t play that one down, that was massive, that was a big win for us,” Carrick told TNT Sports after the final whistle.

“They had some opportunities but to keep a clean sheet and defend like we did, there was a lot of work that had to go into the last day or so in terms of prepping the team with a new back four.”

Carrick picked out Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui for praise after the pair formed a makeshift partnership in the centre of defence in the absence of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt.

“I thought Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui coming in were incredible, Ayden being such a young age and Noussair not really playing centre back in a back four. I have to give the coaching staff a lot of credit on getting the boys ready for that. I thought the boys put a magnificent performance in tonight.”

Carrick has now overseen eight wins in 12 games since replacing Ruben Amorim in the dugout on an interim basis, leading to growing calls for him to be given the job permanently. The 44-year-old hinted that he wants to stay beyond the end of this season, but admitted it’s out of his control.

“I love being here,” he said. “I understand the situation, it’s a bit out my hands. You want to be a part of nights like this, part of special things, create a team. I haven’t got a time frame.”
