Arteta hails Declan Rice as one of the best midfielders in the world

Mikel Arteta has said Declan Rice is among the best midfielders in the world after the Arsenal star scored twice in his side’s 3-2 win at Bournemouth.

Rice returned from injury to score a brace as Arsenal moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

After Evanilson had opened the scoring for Bournemouth, Gabriel Maghalaes fired Arsenal level, before Rice netted to second-half strikes to seal an important win. Eli Junior Kroupi pulled one back but Arsenal held on to take the points.

Rice has evolved into a more attacking threat since signing for Arsenal, with his brace at Bournemouth making it four goals for the Premier League campaign. His goals were an example of a greater licence to get forward, twice arriving late to convert cut-backs.

The 26-year-old is on course to better his best-ever goalscoring season of seven, netted during his debut campaign in North London.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Arteta said Rice’s return was a big moment for his team.

“Every hour for him was important to be available today. We didn’t know for how long, so in the manner that he competed, played and on top of that scored two goals, I think it was outstanding, and a really big message for the team.”

Rice is the current second-favourite to be named PFA Player of the Year, behind Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. Asked if the midfielder can now be considered among the best in the world in his position, Arteta was in no doubt.

“For me yes. For me, the ones that we have are the best. Declan is constantly adding things to his game. He’s constantly adding things to his role in the team. I don’t see where he can stop because he can still improve in a lot of areas and he wants to improve. He’s such a pivotal player for us.”
