It’s been a hell of a time for early goals in the Premier League recently.
The four fastest goals in the top flight this season have all come in the past few weeks, and in quick succession too.
Phil Foden kicked off his current run of excellent form with an ultra-quick strike against Leeds United in late November, finding the net after just 59 seconds.
It was, at the time, the quickest goal of the campaign, but that only lasted a few hours as Malick Thiaw shaved four seconds off the record when he headed home from a corner against Everton later that evening. Incidentally, both men scored a brace.
They were eclipsed this past Saturday by Hugo Ekitike, who sent a brilliant strike flying past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen 51 seconds after the game kicked off at Anfield. (He also scored a brace, funnily enough).
One day later, Mateus Fernandes blew them all out of the water. The West Ham United midfielder stole possession in the Aston Villa box before firing past Marco Bizot just 29 seconds into the match. Unfortunately for him, he did not grab a brace and the Hammers went on to lose. But he can at least say he found the net quicker than any other player this season.
