Dundee FC vs Rangers – Match preview and team news

  • Date: Sunday, 9th November.
  • Kick-off: 3pm BST.
  • Venue: Dens Park, Dundee.

Dundee FC team news

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley faces a significant selection challenge ahead of the Rangers clash. Striker Joe Westley remains a doubt after sustaining an injury during last weekend’s devastating 4-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.

However, the majority of the squad is available for selection. Pressley is potentially able to make several changes from the side that performed poorly against the league leaders.

Rangers team news

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl will be without several key players for the trip to Dundee. Right-back Dujon Sterling remains sidelined with an Achilles tendon issue that has kept him out of action since April. Winger Rabbi Matondo is also unavailable, having been absent since June with a knee injury. Additionally, midfielder Kieran Dowell continues to miss out due to injury concerns.

However, midfielder Connor Barron returns to the squad after serving a one-game suspension. Barron was banned following his red card in the Scottish Premier Sports Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic. This provides Rohl with reinforcements in midfield as Rangers look to maintain their recent domestic form improvements.

Rohl is expected to make changes to his starting XI following Thursday’s disappointing 2-0 Europa League loss to AS Roma at Ibrox, where the Italian giants dominated proceedings. The German manager has praised his team’s resilience despite their recent setbacks, noting that they showed “huge character” despite the challenging circumstances they have faced.

Form

Dundee FC

Dundee’s season has been extremely difficult under Steven Pressley. The Dee are languishing in 11th position in the Scottish Premiership with just nine points from their opening 11 league matches. The club has recorded only two wins and three draws, alongside six defeats, as they struggle to maintain their top-flight status.

Most recently, Dundee suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat away to Hearts on 1 November, a result that has piled enormous pressure on Pressley’s position. However, there have been positive moments this season, most notably a shock 2-0 victory at home against Celtic on 19 October, which provided the club with genuine encouragement.

Earlier this season, Dundee were eliminated from the Scottish League Cup group stage after losing to both Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic. The Dee’s away record has been particularly concerning, with the team failing to win any of their first five matches on the road this season.

Rangers

Rangers’ form has improved noticeably under new head coach Danny Rohl. The Gers are currently sitting in 4th position in the Scottish Premiership with 15 points from their opening 10 league matches. The Light Blues have compiled a record of three wins, six draws, and one loss in the league this season.

Rohl’s tenure has started positively in domestic competition, with Rangers securing victories against Kilmarnock and Hibernian in their recent league fixtures. Following his appointment in October, Rohl has overseen two league wins, a substantial improvement on the struggles that led to the departure of previous manager Russell Martin.

However, Rangers’ European campaign has been deeply troubling. The club lost 3-0 to SK Brann in Rohl’s opening fixture and then to Roma in the midweek. Those results leave the Light Blues bottom of the entire Europa League standings with no points from their opening four league phase matches. Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Roma at Ibrox marked the club’s seventh consecutive European defeat, including qualifying matches, representing a significant concern for the Glasgow giants.

Predicted lineups

Dundee FC: McCracken; Astley, Robertson, Koumetio; Ingram, Jones, Hamilton, Samuels; Yogane, Hay, Reilly.

Rangers: Butland; Tavernier, Souttar, Djiga; Aarons, Barron, Diomande, Gassama; Miovski, Moore, Danilo/.
