Cristian Romero injury update issued following Spurs defeat

Cristian Romero has suffered a minor adductor injury, Spurs boss Thomas Frank confirmed following defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The centre-back had to pull out of the starting lineup before kickoff after injuring himself during the warm-up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Kevin Danso replaced Romero in the backline to form a central defensive partnership with Micky van de Ven.

It’s the latest injury setback to hit Spurs’ defence after Destiny Udogie returned from the international break with a knee issue.

“Minor abductor injury,” Frank told Sky Sports after the final whistle. “He felt a little bit the past few days. We expected him to be fine but he wasn’t. I don’t think it is too big.”

Spurs took the lead through Rodrigo Bentancur in the fifth minute, but two stunning strikes from Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia secured a huge away win for Villa.

It’s the second home defeat of the season for Tottenham, who have won just three of their last 18 outings on their own patch.

“It was exactly the game I expected it to be, against two good teams, very tight,” Frank said. “There weren’t too many chances. I think overall it could’ve gone either way. I think 1-1 would’ve been a fair result. Villa scored two goals from outside the box in moments where you wouldn’t expect them to score. Fair play for their moments of quality. We also easily could’ve won.”

Frank added: “There were two big teams on the pitch. We started very well. Villa produced two goals out of nothing and we had four or five moments where we couldn’t produce. If you told me before the game that these players will be shooting from these positions I’d have said ‘happy days’.”
