Amorim hits back at Rooney over Man Utd criticism

Ruben Amorim has shot back at Wayne Rooney over the former striker’s criticism of the Man Utd manager.

Rooney said the club is “broken” and that he now watches games “expecting” them to lose, adding that he “no faith” in the head coach to turn things around.

Man Utd sit 14th in the Premier League table after losing three of their opening six matches. Amorim is under huge pressure after taking just 34 points from 33 games since taking charge of the team last November.

The Portuguese tactician insists that his system is not at the heart of United’s struggles on the pitch, insinuating that the players have to take responsibility for poor performances.

Asked about Rooney’s criticism, Amorim said: “It is normal. You cannot run away from the results and then [we have the] baggage from last season. But last season for me doesn’t matter.

“We’ve had six games this season and we’ve lost three. We have to look to the games that we lost…

“Did we lose the game against Arsenal because of the system? It is your job to make the opinions.

“When you look at the game against City, was the first thing that you thought about when the game started the system? I think you don’t think about the system in that moment.

“And Brentford, the way we concede goals and the way we create chances, there is nothing to do with the system, that is my opinion.

“I am not saying this team would play better in another system or not. That is not my point. My point is that if I look back at the games we lost, the most important thing when I watch the game is not we lost because of the system. That is my opinion.

“People have different opinions. That is okay.”
