The clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners

The 2025 Ballon d’Or winner will be announced this evening with Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele the favourite for the prize.

Dembele could become the sixth Frenchman to win the award, which will be unveiled in Paris, and the second PSG player after Lionel Messi in 2023.

Ahead of tonight’s ceremony, we’ve looked at the five football clubs to produce the most Ballon d’Or winners.

5. Manchester United – 4

Manchester United have had four winners of football’s biggest prize. The club’s famous ‘Holy Trinity’ of Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best all claimed the Ballon d’Or in a five-year period during the 1960s. Law was the first to win the prize, beating Luis Suarez in the 1964 vote.

Charlton was then recognised for his role in England’s 1966 World Cup win, while Best claimed the award after Manchester United became England’s first European Cup winners two years later.

Cristiano Ronaldo became Manchester United’s fourth Ballon d’Or winner in 2008, after scoring 42 goals in the club’s Premier League and Champions League double season. He’s one of just three English-based players to win the Ballon d’Or in the Premier League era.

4. AC Milan – 6

AC Milan have had six different winners of the Ballon d’Or and eight trophies overall.

The first AC Milan player to claim the prize was Gianni Rivera, who beat compatriot Gigi Riva to the 1969 accolade. Ruud Gullit, George Weah, Andriy Shevechenko and Kaka have also won the award in Milan colours. However, the club’s most successful Ballon d’Or winner is Marco van Basten, a three-time winner between 1988 and 1992.

3. Juventus – 6

Juventus share the same record as Milan, with six different winners and eight trophies in total.

The Old Lady memorably claimed four awards in a row during the 1980s, with Paolo Rossi taking the 1982 prize before Michel Platini won the Ballon d’Or in three consecutive years.

Omar Sivori, Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane and Pavel Nedved have also each won the award while Juventus players.

2. Barcelona – 6

Barcelona’s six winners have totalled a whopping 12 trophies, in large part thanks to Lionel Messi’s record-breaking feats. Messi has won a record eight Ballon d’Or titles, of which six came in the colours of the Catalan giants.

Johan Cruyff was also a multiple Ballon d’Or winner at Barcelona.

Luis Suarez was the first Barcelona winner in 1960, while the Spanish side have also had two Brazilian winners in Rivaldo (1999) and Ronaldinho (2005). Hristo Stoichkov (1994) completes the group of Barcelona Ballon d’Or winners.

1. Real Madrid – 8

Real Madrid perhaps value the Ballon d’Or more than any other side, with the club museum proudly showcasing their successes.

The Spanish giants have had eight different winners, and 12 trophies overall. Cristiano Ronaldo won four of his Ballon d’Or awards in Madrid, while Alfredo Di Stéfano (2) also claimed the prize more than once with Los Blancos.

Karim Benzema was the most recent Real Madrid player to win the trophy in 2022.
