Marc Guehi handling Liverpool transfer failure with ‘respect’

Marc Guehi has shown a “brilliant attitude” despite missing out on a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window, says England boss Thomas Tuchel.

The Crystal Palace centre-back was poised to join the Reds on Deadline Day after the two clubs agreed on a deal.

However, the transfer was called off after Palace failed to sign a replacement, missing out on Igor Julio who joined West Ham United on loan from Brighton.

Guehi is reportedly ‘extremely unhappy’ he was denied a move to Anfield, but Tuchel says the defender has shown no signs it has affected him while on international duty.

The 25-year-old was called up for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, which take place this Saturday and next Tuesday respectively.

“Of course we had a chat with him,” Tuchel said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field, he has a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side. He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success, he is the captain and the leader and he played very impressively at the end of last season.

“He has continued like that in camp and he handles it [his transfer situation] with respect and with a brilliant attitude.”

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn believes he and Guehi are competing for the same spot in Tuchel’s starting lineup.

“Obviously, Marc is a top player and very close to move to Liverpool as well,” he said. “I feel like it keeps us pushing, and I feel like that’s what the gaffer wants in possession and the patterns he wants us to get further up the pitch, and it suits that.

“Yeah, right at this moment, I’d probably agree that he is the direct competition.”
