The five football fixtures you must watch this weekend, including the Old Firm, Basque Derby and clash between the Bundesliga’s best.

Five spicy fixtures you must watch this weekend:

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Liverpool are in crisis right now, with the Premier League champions beaten six times in their last seven outings. It’s an incredible decline for last season’s title winners, who followed that triumph with a record-breaking summer spend.

Issues persist right across Arne Slot’s team, who begin a crunch period by hosting Aston Villa on Saturday night. The visitors have won four on the bounce and will be keen to stick the knife in further.

Real Sociedad vs Athletic Bilbao

The Basque derby takes place on Saturday evening, with a struggling Sociedad side welcoming arch-rivals Athletic Bilbao to the Reale Arena.

Sociedad are slumped in 17th position after a nightmare start in La Liga, while an inconsistent Athletic are stuck in mid-table. Neither side has reached expectations so far, but a derby success could ignite their campaigns.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea

London also stages a fascinating local grudge match, as Tottenham Hotspur host Chelsea. Thomas Frank’s team are third in the Premier League despite inconsistent performances, though their home form is a concern.

Spurs are without a win at home since the opening day, ahead of facing a Chelsea team who have won three on the spin on the road. However, the Blues will need to keep their cool in the derby, after picking up five red cards already this season.

Celtic vs Rangers

The spice heats up significantly when the Old Firm comes around. Celtic meet Rangers in the semi-finals of the League Cup, with both sides under new management.

Martin O’Neill began his second stint in the Celtic dugout with a win in midweek, while Danny Rohl has overseen back-to-back league wins at Rangers. With both adrift in the title race at present, neither can afford to allow cup competition to pass them by.

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen

German football’s two most recent champions collide in the Bundesliga this weekend.

Bayern Munich have been in irrepressible form so far, winning 14 straight games in all competitions in a record-breaking start to the season.

The Bavarians will take some stopping, though Leverkusen – the only team to break their title dominance since 2013 – will hope to throw a spanner in the works. Leverkusen head into the clash with confidence after winning four of their last five games.
