The FIFA World Cup rolls onto the quarter-finals after Argentina came from behind to beat Egypt while Switzerland eliminated Colombia following a penalty shootout.Â
Here is our in-depth recap of all the action from Tuesday, including what you might have missed overnight.
World Cup Day 27:Â
Argentina produce astonishing comeback to avoid disaster
Argentina came perilously close to exiting the World Cup after going two goals down to Egypt in Atlanta, but staged an incredible come-from-behind victory to stay in the competition.
Yasser Ibrahim stunned the reigning champions when he head in from a corner in the 15th minute. Lionel Messi was handed the opportunity to level matters shortly after when Nico Tagliafico was fouled in the box, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed the right way to save the penalty.
Egypt thought they had doubled their lead in the second half when Mostafa Ziko finished off an excellent counter-attack, but it was ruled out after the VAR spotted a foul on Lisandro Martinez at the start of the move.
Ziko didn’t have to wait too long for his moment, however, as he yet again put the finishing touches on a counter-attack, and there was no chalking this one off.
Argentina, who had failed to trouble Egypt greatly up until this point, turned it on in the final 20 minutes, amping up the pressure on the north African nation. They finally made the breakthrough in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed in from Messi’s cross.

The 39-year-old then found the equaliser moments later, capitalising on a broken ball with a powerful shot that Shobeir couldn’t stop. The was game headed for extra time when Lautaro Martinez sent in a looping cross for Enzo Fernandez, who brilliantly sent it into the net with a header.
It sparked emotional celebrations from the Argentinians, with Messi seen in tears after the full-time whistle. La Albiceleste were meant to be on the ‘easy’ side of the draw, but they have been caused massive problems by first Cape Verde and then Egypt, leading to ties that were far more entertaining than anyone expected.

Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties
If Argentina versus Egypt was a rollercoaster, then Switzerland and Colombia was more like a no-thrills carousel.
The two sides played out a rather sedate affair in Vancouver, with both teams seemingly playing for penalties from quite early on.
Colombia had the better of the chances throughout the game, particularly in extra-time when they outshot the Swiss 8-1 over the half-hour period. But they ultimately rued not pressing harder for a winner when it finally did go to a shootout.
Former Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez smashed his spot kick off the crossbar, allowing Switzerland to take the lead. But his blushes were momentarily spared when Manuel Akanji blasted his attempt over the bar.
Colombia could not follow it up with a score, however, as Juan Hernandez saw his effort saved by Gregor Kobel. Cedric Itten and Luis Diaz traded scores before Ruben Vargas sealed the victory for Murat Yakin’s side.
